A 95-Year-Old Japanese Ex-Cardiologist Shares His 8 Essentials for Longevity and Joy

During a summer visit to Osaka, Japan, time was spent with a 95-year-old grandfather, a retired cardiologist, whose approach to life is both creative and community-oriented.

He embodies the essence of aging with grace and vitality.

Outlined below are his eight key practices for a fulfilling and lengthy life:

Morning Walks

The grandparents are early birds, embarking on their walk by 5 a.m. Their routine includes a 30-minute to one-hour walk, accumulating at least 7,000 steps.

Their routes vary from hilly trails near Minoh Falls to circuits around the Ikeda area, beginning each day with vigor.

Purposeful Exercise

Following the morning walk, he engages in a specific exercise regimen.

This includes stretching, strength training, and balance exercises, tailored daily to his capabilities, ensuring active movement without overexertion.

Social Media Connection

Post-exercise, he dedicates time to connect with loved ones via Facebook and Instagram.

Recognizing that social isolation can lead to loneliness in older adults, he uses this online time to maintain bonds with his global circle, including grandchildren in the U.S.
